Giants shut down Rafael Devers after monster 37-homer season

Rafael Devers’ season has officially come to an end, cutting short a productive year in which the San Francisco Giants slugger established himself as the team’s top power threat.

The Giants placed Devers on the 60-day injured list Sunday because of a core muscle injury that could require surgery.

Devers is scheduled to meet with specialist Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia on Monday. If surgery is determined to be the best option, the procedure could take place as early as Tuesday.

The injury brings an abrupt conclusion to a season in which Devers led San Francisco with 37 home runs and 98 RBIs.

Giants manager Tony Vitello revealed that the issue wasn’t something that suddenly appeared.

“He battled with it the entire year,” Vitello said. “I think it’s something that has bothered him for a few years now.”

Devers had been remarkably durable despite the discomfort, appearing in 309 consecutive games before sitting out Wednesday’s 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Even more impressive was how well he performed while dealing with the injury.

Devers was on fire

Devers finished his season on an offensive tear, hitting eight home runs and driving in 20 runs over his final 11 games. He homered in each of his final two appearances.

His season also represented an impressive turnaround after a difficult beginning.

Devers was batting just .207 with two home runs through April before eventually raising his average to .258.

Now, the Giants’ priority will be getting their star healthy for 2027.

“I think he’s pretty geeked up about next year,” Vitello said. “His confidence in next year’s success gives me confidence.”

Devers is currently in the third season of the massive 10-year, $313.5 million contract he originally signed before being acquired from the Boston Red Sox in June 2025.

Across 10 major league seasons, Devers owns a .274 career batting average with 272 home runs.

San Francisco selected outfielder Scott Bandura’s contract from Triple-A Sacramento following Devers’ move to the injured list.
