"He said we DONE with that Superman sh*t": NFL fans react as Drake Maye refused to do Cam Newton celebration

Drake Maye was at the center of social media buzz on Sunday after a brief game moment with Stefon Diggs drew attention.

During New England’s matchup against Cincinnati, cameras showed Diggs mimicking the chest-opening motion of Cam Newton's iconic Superman pose in front of Maye between plays. The quarterback shook his head. They did a handshake routine instead and moved along.

Fans on X connected the moment to the commentary that circulated last week surrounding Maye and Newton.

“He say we DONE wit dat superman sh*t,” one fan wrote.

“He said f*** Cam Newton and that s****y a*s Superman celly,” another fan wrote. “Drake said f*** Cam,” a fan commented.

More reactions came in.

Maye did the celebration against the Panthers in Week 4 as a nod to Newton. The former NFL MVP is a figure in their shared North Carolina football roots.

Cam Newton evaluated Drake Maye’s second-year performance on Friday. He questioned whether Maye’s success stemmed more from offensive design than individual ability.

"It has fool's gold written all over them, cubic zirconia middle of the mall," Newton said, via ESPN. "And yes, is Drake Maye playing good football? Absolutely. I would like to attest his great play to one specific person that I know too well, Josh McDaniels. Now Josh McDaniels may not be a great head coach, but he is a brilliant offensive mind."

Maye responded to Newton on Wednesday.

"I don't even know what show he's on," Maye said, via WEEI. "I think they get paid to make remarks and make certain comments. So, I just worry about what people in our organization think, and worry about we think and what my teammates think. People are going to have different opinions. I'm just going out there on Sunday and worrying about ourselves."

The response drew pushback from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who said Maye’s position made it implausible to be unaware of such media coverage.
