Luka Modric has shared his thoughts on the raging debate of superiority between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, opting to avoid making a choice. The Croatia international played alongside Ronaldo for many years at the Santiago Bernabeu, and has been an adversary of Messi's over the years.

In an interview with Corriere, Modric was asked to choose between his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The 40-year-old midfielder provided a mature response, praising both players as he revealed that he does not like to be asked the question.

“It’s a question I don’t like. They marked an era. I am more attached to Cristiano because I played with him, he was my partner at Madrid, and I assure you that he is not only a great footballer; he is an incredible person. People don’t know it, but he has a huge heart, always ready to help others. And he’s a simple, normal man. As a man, I don’t know him (Messi), but I do not doubt that he is also extraordinary. As a player, magnificent", he said (via Madrid Universal).

Ronaldo and Messi are widely regarded as the greatest players of their generation and two of the greatest to ever kick a football. They have an incredible 13 Ballons d'Or between them, with Modric also having won the prestigious award once in his career.

Lionel Messi has arguably enjoyed a slightly better career, having won more titles as an individual and in team football. Cristiano Ronaldo, on the other hand, is closing in on a landmark 1,000-goal tally that will make him the first man in history to achieve this feat.

Real Madrid legend picks between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for 2026 World Cup

Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos has picked Cristiano Ronaldo as a favourite for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title ahead of Lionel Messi and Argentina. The former Germany international is set to observe the tournament as a fan following his retirement in 2024.

Kroos spoke with Romario, revealing his choices of favourites for the World Cup title next summer. He named Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and France as the teams he expects to succeed Argentina as champions of the world.

"My favourites are Spain, Portugal, France, and Morocco", he said (via Soy Futbol).

Lionel Messi led Argentina to win the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, winning the competition for the first time in his career. Cristiano Ronaldo would hope to emulate his long-time rival in North America next summer when he plays in his last edition of the tournament.
