Ishan Kishan's mother, Suchitra, broke into tears while reacting to her son's selection for the upcoming New Zealand T20I home series and the subsequent 2026 T20 World Cup. The keeper-batter returned to the national team after over two years.
Suchitra gave an interview to News 18 after the squad announcement on Saturday, December 20. She became visibly emotional while commenting on Kishan's comeback.
She said:
"I was praying at that time, and tears started falling from my eyes while looking at God. My son worked very hard, and he got rewarded for it."Ishan Kishan last played a T20I in November 2023. The stumper took a break, citing mental fatigue later that year during the side's South Africa tour. He lost his place on the team soon after and was even omitted from the central contracts list in February 2024.
The 27-year-old was included in the central contracts list for 2024-25, getting placed in the Grade C category.
Meanwhile, India's five-match home T20I series against New Zealand kicks off at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on January 21. Following the series, India will begin their T20 World Cup title defense.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led side are part of Group A with Pakistan, the United States of America (USA), the Netherlands, and Namibia. They open their campaign against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 7.
Ishan Kishan returned to India's T20I team after leading Jharkhand to maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26 triumph
Ishan Kishan was last seen in action during the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26. He captained Jharkhand in the domestic T20 tournament.
He led the side to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title. Jharkhand beat Haryana by 69 runs in the final at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, on December 18.
Kishan notched up a blistering century, scoring 101 runs off 49 balls with the help of 10 maximums and six fours. The southpaw finished as the leading run-scorer of the edition, amassing 517 runs across 10 innings at a strike rate of 197.32.
