Iowa 20 minutes from history as Elite 8 run pauses for bizarre horn delay

1 hour ago 2

For the first time in decades, Iowa Hawkeyes can see it. Not in the distance. Not as a dream. Right there in front of them. They are just 20 minutes away from the program’s first Final Four appearance since 1980, a moment that has been building for nearly half a century.

An unexpected pause in a massive moment

But right in the middle of that moment, everything stopped.

Inside Toyota Center, with 7:43 left in the first half and Iowa holding a 22-20 lead over Illinois Fighting Illini, the game came to a sudden halt. The reason had nothing to do with basketball. The horn got stuck, blaring continuously and making it impossible to play.

Eleven minutes that changed the feel

What followed was something you almost never see at this stage of March Madness. The delay lasted 11 minutes, and it completely changed the feel of the game. Players went from battling for every possession to sitting on the floor, casually talking, and getting shots up just to stay loose. Some went through light warmups, trying to keep their rhythm. For a stretch, it felt more like an open gym than an Elite Eight game with everything on the line.

Twenty minutes to make history

When play finally resumed, the reality quickly returned. Iowa still had the lead. More importantly, they still had a real chance to end a 46-year wait and reach the Final Four. The path is right there now, with just one half left to play.

If they finish it, the reward is a trip to Indianapolis, where either Duke Blue Devils or UConn Huskies will be waiting. But none of that matters yet.

It all comes down to the next 20 minutes.
