Injuries throughout the early part of the season have derailed the New York Yankees' pitching staff. With Gerrit Cole going down for the entire year, Luis Gil dealing with a right lat strain, and Marcus Stroman down with a knee injury, the Yankees haven't had much luck on that front.
Gil is the most important part of this Yankees rotation moving forward regarding players who could return from an injury. While the Yankees would love to get Stroman back, they need their Rookie of the Year on the mound and healthy as soon as possible to be the team they're looking to be.
According to Randy Miller of NJ.com, his expected return will come in July.
“Injured throwing a bullpen on Feb. 28 in Tampa, Gil began a throwing program on April 27 after being shut down for five weeks. On Monday, he progressed to playing catch three days in a row. In two or three weeks, he’s scheduled to get back to throwing off a mound,” he wrote.
During the 2024 campaign, Gil threw the baseball at a high level, winning that Rookie of the Year Award after posting a 3.50 ERA and striking out 171 hitters in 151.2 innings. He limited his walks, too, walking 77 hitters in that span.

Perhaps he isn't that dominant at times, but he's still much better than what the Yankees are currently running out there, for the most part. If he can return to a 3.50 ERA level, the Yankees would be in an excellent position.
If this injury continues to keep him sidelined, things could get ugly quickly.
