Insider lists Astros among potential fits for Brewers star shortstop

The Houston Astros overcome a 7-19 start to the 2024 season and ended up winning 88 games to capture another American League West crown.

However, after falling short in the Wild Card Series to the suddenly resurgent Detroit Tigers, they have some questions to answer in the offseason. Alex Bregman is a free agent and could be on the way out.

However, Jon Morosi of MLB Network proposed the idea of Houston pivoting to Willy Adames and making him their third baseman.

"Interest in him is very broad. There's a number of teams that love him at shortstop. And why wouldn't you? But also some that might consider him in a different position," Morosi said on Friday. "The Astros if they don't re-sign Bregman, I love that idea by the way. You put Adames potentially at third, [Jeremy] Pena at short, [Jose] Altuve at second. I would love that infield."

Houston could put together a very strong infield, even in the event that Bregman walks. Adames' defense at shortstop has come into question recently, and there is a strong possibility a team could move him to third base.

The 29-year-old hit .251 with 32 home runs, 112 RBI, 21 stolen bases and a .794 OPS. He also had a 118 OPS+ and posted a 3.1 WAR.

He might be a bit of an offensive upgrade over Bregman, and he would give Houston a great chance to make a deep postseason run in 2025. He'll be expensive, but it might be worth it for the Astros to take a shot at signing him.
