Insider links Red Sox to trading for $15M veteran pitcher

The Boston Red Sox entered the All-Star break on a 10-game winning streak and are one of the hottest teams in Major League Baseball.

The Red Sox have now taken over a Wild Card spot and are just three games back of the Toronto Blue Jays for the top spot in the AL East. With that, Boston will look to add to their roster ahead of the trade deadline on July 31.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes the Red Sox will look to add to their rotation, and he believes Charlie Morton of the Baltimore Orioles is a good fit.

“A couple of weeks ago, things might have looked different in what they needed as well. I would have said a number two starter behind Garrett Crochet,” Rosenthal said on MLB on FOX. “But the way Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito have pitched in recent weeks, maybe they don’t need to aim quite that high.

"I will give you one name that might be interesting for them," Rosenthal added. "Charlie Morton. Horrible start to the season, but in his last 59 innings, 3.05 ERA, he and Alex Cora know each other from Houston."

Morton signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Orioles, and he would add some more depth to the Red Sox rotation. He likely would be Boston’s third or fourth starter and can also be a playoff option for Boston.

Morton is 41 years old and is 5-7 with a 4.18 ERA in 20 games, including 14 starts. But, as Rosenthal said, he has turned his season around, as in his last 7 starts, he’s 4-0 with a 2.72 ERA in 36.1 innings.
