Hayden Panettiere's Ex Wladimir Klitschko Speaks Out After Her Death

Even after their breakup, Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko made a titanic effort to be on the same team for daughter Kaya.

So when the Remember the Titans actress died Aug. 16, the Ukrainian boxer expressed their family’s "profound shock and grief."

Deeply saddened by her tragic death, "She left this world far too soon," Klitschko wrote on Instagram Aug. 18 alongside a throwback photo of the former couple smiling with their daughter. "Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya."

Reflecting on how Panettiere “built an incredible career through immense talent, while also facing the darker sides of a very demanding industry,” he made it clear, "Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives.”

A place Klitschko vows to keep in their 11-year-old’s memory. "To our daughter Kaya,” the 50-year-old added, “I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.”

Expressing his condolences and how "young and talented people like Hayden should not leave this world so soon," Klitschko concluded, "Rest easy, Hayden. May you find eternal peace."

Panettiere died in Greenville, South Carolina, after going into cardiac arrest, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office shared in an Aug. 17 release.

In audio of the emergency dispatch call obtained by TMZ, responders can be heard discussing an apparent overdose. However, the coroner’s office noted the 36-year-old’s cause and manner of death is pending further investigation, adding "no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death."

And while Klitschko was one of many to pay tribute to Panettiere, their bond had endured many rounds with Panettiere first climbing into his ring, so to speak, nearly two decades ago.

When Did Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko Start Dating?

Panettiere met Klitschko in 2009 after she ran into him (almost literally) at a party in Beverly Hills.

"I jumped back and looked up toward a broad face with a jawline that could have been chiseled out of marble,” she recalled in her 2026 memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning. "'Oh my God!’ I said. 'You are huge!'" To which he replied, "'And you are tiny.'"

However, they developed a big love. A first date at L.A.’s Magic Castle lead to years of long distance, on and off-dating and finally a 2013 proposal over Skype. The next year, they found out they were expecting a baby, welcoming daughter Kaya that December.

When Did Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko Break Up?

After enduring a traumatic delivery that involved a C-section, three-hour surgery and seven blood transfusions, the complications piled up for Panettiere. As she struggled to deal with postpartum depression, she began to self-medicate with alcohol.

Over the next few years, Panettiere sought treatment as she navigated mental health struggles, raising Kaya with Klitschko across two continents and both of their careers. But when Kaya was about 3, they split.

"I prefer big, explosive breakups rather than slow, painful fizzles, but Wlad’s nature was to take a struggle all the way to the twelfth round," Panettiere wrote. "It was what it was, and there was nothing I could do. I told myself a broken family was better than no family at all."

What Did Hayden Panettiere Say About Wladimir Klitschko Getting Custody of Daughter Kaya?

"No mother could forget a single thing about the day she signed her child away," Panettiere wrote of making the painful decision to give Klitschko full custody, their daughter residing with him in Ukraine since 2018.

While the Nashville star noted she'd considered suing, she also acknowledged she was early in her recovery and didn’t want Kaya to live in the public eye or in the middle of a legal battle. Still, she called living apart "the most gut-wrenching experience of my life."

And after Panettiere completed eight months of treatment in 2021, she didn’t want to take Kaya out of her world.

"By the time I finally got healthy, I felt like it would have been unfair of me and selfish of me to try to pull her out away from this life that she had created," Panettiere said on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast in May. "She was living an incredible life. She’s an incredible little girl."

Knowing "she’s got two parents that love her," Panettiere, who visited and FaceTimed Kaya, continued, "I know in my heart that she feels supported. I have an incredible relationship with her."

What Had Hayden Panettiere Said About Her Relationship With Ex Wladimir Klitschko Before Her Death?

Panettiere noted in her book she didn’t "blame Wlad for any of my wrongs" and that they’d remained on good terms.

"Wlad is one of the most courageous people I’ve ever met and a true hero in so many ways," she wrote. "Time and again he’s built me up when others would have knocked me down."

Even more importantly, she told E! News in May, “He’s the father of my daughter. I want him to be Superman in her eyes, and he’s an amazing human being."

Hayden Panettiere announced during the 2014 Emmy Awards that she and then-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko were expecting their first baby together.

"It's a little girl," the Nashville star told E! on the red carpet. "I can't wait for her to come out, this little one."

The pair, who split in 2018, welcomed Kaya Klitschko on Dec. 9, 2014.

Daddy's Little Girl

Panettiere struggled with severe postpartum depression after welcoming Kaya. Though, her candor helped bring attention to maternal mental health. Ultimately, she gave Klitschko full custody in 2018 and was grateful to see the strong support system her daughter had.

"It was grief in the beginning," she recalled on a May 2026 episode of the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast. "But because of the relationship that I do have with her and how things ultimately played out, I'm incredibly grateful to her. She has an incredible father, an incredible family."

Although the Heroes alum lived separately from Kaya, the mother-daughter duo still shared a strong bond.

"It's not what I hoped motherhood was going to be or what it would look like," she admitted. "But I'm so lucky that it turned out the way it did and that she is safe and a wonderful, well-rounded person."

Being the Best Mom She Can Be

While Kaya lived with Klitschko in Europe full-time, she and the Scream 4 actress spent as much time as possible together.

"I have an incredible relationship with her," she explained on Jay Shetty's podcast. "I go travel as much as I can. I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her, but we talk about really deep things."

Trying Her Best for Kaya

As Panettiere navigated mental health struggles and addiction, she always tried to be a better mom, friend and person.

"I've always strived to be a positive person," she wrote in her 2026 memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, "but I grieve all the hours I lose to addiction, my broken relationships, and my loved ones who are no longer here."

Nonetheless, the actress had continued to maintain a positive outlook on her future.

"I'm far from perfect," she added, "but my life quakes and moments of struggle are little miracles that have helped me grow."
