Quinn Ewers is having a disastrous training camp that could put his Dolphins standing in doubt

Quinn Ewers appears to be on thin ice in Miami. 

The former Texas quarterback is struggling in Dolphins camp, leaving some to speculate that he could soon be out of a job. 

The Miami Herald’s Omar Kelly floated the idea that the franchise could move on from Ewers, who was expected to be the backup behind free agent addition Malik Willis this season. 

“There is nobody in training camp having a tougher training camp than Quinn Ewers,” Kelly said during an appearance on the “Dolphins Collective” show. “It’s rough out there. Quinn is a better quarterback than what he has shown.

“But now we’re at the point where if [Anthony] Richardson gets cut by Indianapolis, I’m not claiming him because I don’t want the contract, but I’m definitely going to let him know we want you here. And then that means, Quinn, you might be cut. And it’s not just Richardson that I’ve got my eyes on.”

Ewers struggled mightily during the Dolphins’ preseason opener against the Commanders, completing just one of eight pass attempts while throwing an ugly interception. 

Miami head coach Jeff Hafley saw plenty for Ewers to clean up, but he didn’t put every mistake on the rookie quarterback.

“There were some missed throws, missed opportunities,” Hafley said. “The interception that he threw clearly wasn’t a great decision, especially in that part of the field.”

He added that on two other pass plays of Ewers’ “the process was right” and the breakdowns came elsewhere on the field.

“While clearly there are some throws he wants back, and there’s some mistakes, the process was right on those two,” he said.

Ewers, who was selected in the seventh round by Miami in the 2025 NFL Draft, reportedly suffered a groin injury during the game, which may explain the poor performance. 

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, their third-stringer, Cam Miller, didn’t look any better, going 3-for-11 through the air with two picks. 

After watching Ewers and Miller struggle against Washington, the Dolphins brought back Mark Gronowski just nine days after waiving him, with Ewers’ groin injury also factoring into the move.

In four appearances last year (three starts), Ewers threw for 622 yards with three touchdown passes and three interceptions.
