How does Indy 500 qualifying work?

Qualifying for the Indy 500 takes place the weekend before the event.

On Saturday, the drivers participate in the qualifying, with the 12 fastest drivers returning on Sunday to determine starting positions 1-12. Those drivers will be split in two groups, either 1-6 or 7-12, depending on their qualifying finishes.

Participants finishing in spots 13-30 on Saturday will start in whichever position they finish during the first round of qualifying on Saturday. However, drivers with the slowest times may also return for a last-chance qualifying for spots 31-33.
