Australia suffered their first loss in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle as England secured a win in the 2025-26 Ashes Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The Ben Stokes-led side chased down the 175-run target with four wickets to spare to end the Test inside two days, and open their account in the series.

A chaotic opening day had witnessed both sides being bowled out before Stumps, and the pattern continued as Australia collapsed to 132 in the second innings, with only three batters recording double figures. England went all out in the run chase, smashing 70 runs off the first ten overs.

After Australia were able to strike back with a couple of wickets, the visitors tempered their approach and eventually got over the line in the final session of the day.

Ahead of the fourth Test, after losing three matches in a row in the series, England were placed seventh in the WTC Standings with a PCT of 27.08. Their first win in Australia since 2010-11, improves their numbers slightly as it bumps up to 35.19, but they are rooted in seventh place in the table, below India.

Australia, on the other hand, finds its flawless record being rattled. Prior to the Boxing Day encounter, they had a PCT of 100, winning each of their first six matches in the cycle. While the loss takes a hit to their PCT, they still maintain the top spot, with New Zealand placed second.

2025-26 Ashes 5th Test to take place in Sydney

Although Australia already sealed the urn with their win in the third Test in Adelaide, England have a chance to repair some damage by closing out the controversial tour on a high.

The two sides will face each other in the fifth and final Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from Sunday, January 4 onwards.
