The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are reportedly in the market for a defensive lineman at the trade deadline and the Dallas Cowboys are rumored to have one available.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Chiefs "are in the market for a defensive tackle" and the Bills "could add on the defensive line with Ed Oliver out indefinitely."
One player both teams could target for more depth is Cowboys former first-round pick and defensive lineman Mazi Smith, who Rapoport says is available for trade.
"Dallas also appears to be open to trading 2023 first-round DT Mazi Smith, who has only played in five games this season," Rapoport wrote.
The Chiefs recently brought back Mike Pennel to pair with Chris Jones, but there's no doubt the team could use more depth behind those two.
In Buffalo, Oliver isn't the only injury the Bills are dealing with upfront. T.J. Sanders and DeWayne Carter are on injured reserve and DaQuan Jones is set to miss his second consecutive game with a calf injury.
Smith was a first-round pick of the Cowboys in 2023 but he has not come close to living up to expectations.
After Smith played in all 34 games over his first two seasons in the NFL, he has played in just five this season and has been a healthy scratch in the others.
There is no doubt the Chiefs and Bills would prefer a more sure option, than Smith, who is far more likely to fail than succeed.
But if the picking are slim on the trade market, it's not crazy to think they may take a flyer on a young player who will only cost a seventh-round pick, at most, and quite possibly just a seventh-round pick swap.
