Jeff Gordon traces family origin to a lifelong tenure with Hendrick Motorsports
Jeff Gordon signed on with Hendrick Motorsports in 1999, a position he'd go on to hold for 17 years. Gordon racked up 93 Cup Series wins during this time, making him third on the all time wins list. As such, he was inducted in NASCAR's Hall of Fame in 2019.
In an interview with Kyle Petty, Gordon reflected upon his path into racing and pointed to his stepdad, John Bickford, as a major influence.
"Early on, I got introduced to cars and racing really, really young. My stepdad, he had a machine shop and built things for people with race cars and cars," he said. The Californian noted how his stepdad made him get into sprint cars. After a successful stint in the category, Gordon joined the Buck Baker driving school, where he found a ride in the Busch Series(now O'Reilly Auto Parts Series). Gordon then recounted a moment from his sophomore year in the series, when he first met Rick Hendrick, the owner of HMS.
"So, we go the second year, go to Atlanta early in the season, and we win that race... On Monday or Tuesday of the next week, Rick [Hendrick] asked me to come down to his office. And I went... And I was like, "Holy crap, I'm sitting in front of Rick Hendrick. Like, is this really, true? Is this really possible? Is this gonna happen?""Jeff Gordon eventually found a seat in HMS and the rest is history. He recently shared how his new role as VP of HMS gave him a deeper appreciation for the NASCAR title chase.
