Al-Ittihad star Karim Benzema has revealed that he is open to a shock return to Real Madrid if the conditions are right. The veteran striker swapped the Bernabeu for Saudi's riches in the summer of 2023 and has remained in the country since.
The Frenchman spoke with Diario AS about a variety of topics, and answered a question on the possibility of a return to the Bernabeu. He revealed that he remains affiliated to the club and can return if Florentino Perez remains at the helm of the club's affairs.
“Real Madrid return? If Florentino is still there, it could HAPPEN. I talk to him and it’s POSSIBLE. I’m a Madridista. I feel it in my soul. Madrid is still my city. We’ll see what happens", he said (via @MadridXtra on X).Karim Benzema made his name at Olympique Lyon in the late 2000's and earned a move to Real Madrid in 2009, the same summer as when Cristiano Ronaldo joined the club. Both players would go on to achieve great success at the club, with Benzema going on to become captain of Los Blancos.
Benzema spent 14 years at the Spanish club before moving to Saudi Arabia at the end of his contract in the summer of 2023. He ended up as the club's second all-time top goalscorer, only behind Ronaldo.
The former France international scored 354 goals and provided 155 assists in 648 appearances for Real Madrid. He won the Ballon d'Or and UEFA Player of the Year in 2022, and won 25 major honours with the Spanish outfit. He has scored 43 times in 71 games in Saudi Arabia, leading Al-Ittihad to a league title.
Real Madrid handed boost ahead of LaLiga return: Reports
Real Madrid have received a boost as defender Dean Huijsen is reportedly set to be fit to play for them when they return to league action this weekend. The Spain international has pulled out of the national team with a muscle problem, but is expected to feature against Elche on Sunday.
Huijsen was feared to have picked up a groin problem and left Spain's camp abruptly, returning to his club's Valdebebas base for assessment. A report from EFE (via beIN Sports) has now revealed that the 20-year-old suffered a minor muscle issue and will undergo physiotherapy with a view to returning to team training on Wednesday.
Los Blancos boss Xabi Alonso will be thrilled to see the defender in the squad for their league meeting with Elche. He has had to deal with a soleus injury already this season that forced him to sit out two games last month.
