Rescued this little guy from a car engine

Individual pictured is a model used for illustrative purposes.

  • 02

Rescued this sweet kitten from our parking lot five days ago he'd spent two consecutive nights hiding in car engines and yowling the whole night. He

  • 03

continued crying the first night in our house, but since then he's been totally fine. He's super cuddly, not scared of strangers, and seems fine when left alone.

  • 04

He acts out whenever I'm around (pushing things around, playing with things he shouldn't) but leaves everything undisturbed

  • 05

through the night when he's alone. He loves to curl up and sleep on my shoulder and lap, and has taken to my roommate in

  • 06

the same way. He eats and uses the litter just fine. He's already been to the vet and was super well-behaved.

  • 07

I know it's been less than a week, but I'm feeling super overwhelmed and anxious about keeping him. I've wanted a cat for

  • 08

a while but have avoided it because I'm worried about the responsibility and whether my lifestyle is conducive to caring for a cat (I have to travel a lot for

  • 09

work, but I live with roommates who already love him and are willing to care for him as their own.) At the same time, I can't

  • 10

deny the cat distribution system and how he showed up so serindipitously at this time in my life.

  • 11

I guess I'm looking for some reassurance. I was pretty sure I didn't want an orange cat because I'm a cat aunt to a friend's crazy orange cat - he's

  • 12

unfriendly and constantly getting into trouble and only cares about food. But this little guy is just so sweet, even if he a little naughty.

  • 13

What do I do? The plan right now is to foster him for a few weeks to see how we all adjust to each other, and then if it doesn't work out find a loving home for him there has already been some interest. But I don't know what to do!!!! I'm super overwhelmed.

sweetdreamsmoonbeam You got this! Enjoy this time w your new baby ;)

  • 17

nakedonmygoat Of course you should keep him. You've been chosen! He sounds like a real sweetie, too.

  • Once a cat chooses you, that's pretty much it. You can tell yourself you're only fostering, that you're still deciding, or that you'll find them another home in a few weeks, but the kitty has already made up their mind. They've picked their favorite lap, claimed a spot on the bed, and figured out exactly where the treats are kept. At that point, you're not really deciding whether to keep the cat. You're just waiting to accept that the cat has decided to keep you.

Wise-Drag-7254 OMG please keep him. He is adorable and will love you till his last day

  • 19

DiligentAttempts Please keep him. He'll be your pal when you need one.

Garnet_Mica_Schist It sounds like you have a solid support system for the little baby! If you can afford it, go for it

  • The good news is that the roommates already love him too, so this little guy can basically be everyone's cat! If work trips are the biggest worry, having people at home who are happy to feed him, play with him, and give him plenty of cuddles makes things a whole lot easier. Plus, we're sure he wouldn't complain about having multiple humans to spoil him. More laps to sleep on, more hands giving treats, and more people to get away with being naughty around!

Minimum-Comedian-372 He will never forget how you saved him and will always be grateful and give you all the love. I'm not kidding. I've had orange cats in the past and now have two orange grand cats, I find that they are derpy and sweet.

Queasy-Spirit6437 It's your cat now. Kidding aside. Cats are fine being alone while your working. We have 8 of them and sometimes don't see any of them for hours. Room mates are a bonus as well.

  • 23

Archival Squirrel Don't be anxious. Cats need love, kindness, attention, and food just like all living beings, that's mostly it.. If your roommates love him too that's even easier. Don't overthink it. Just love him.

  • At the end of the day, cats really just need someone to love them and make sure they're happy, safe, and cared for. You don't have to be the purrfect pawrent or have everything figured out from day one. Give them a cozy place to sleep, plenty of food, some playtime, and lots of cuddles, and they're usually pretty happy campers. This little guy already seems to have found all of that, plus a whole house full of humans to love him!
