Prior to the NHL getting halted because of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, the Carolina Hurricanes went on a three-game win streak. Coach Rod Brind'Amour knew his rotations well and perfectly timed his players' shifts on the ice. Brandon Bussi became a staple in these lineups which is why general manager Eric Tulsky made a big move.
Carolina commits long-term to the undrafted underdog
The Hurricanes just signed Bussi to a three-year deal which is valued at $5.7 million. This now prevents him from being an unrestricted free agent heading into the 2026 NHL offseason and solves a lot of the goaltending woes for Carolina.
There is something special about Bussi that everyone in the NHL took note of. He worked his way up from an entry-level contract with the Providence Bruins in the AHL before getting signed by the Hurricanes. The goalie made the most out of this opportunity. Coach Brind'Amour trusted him to play 27 games for the Hurricanes and it paid off every single time. He is second in the NHL in goals against average which clocks in at 2.16.
Tulsky explained why this decision was crucial for the Hurricanes' Stanley Cup hopes as they sit atop the Metropolitan Division, via NHL.com.
"Before we brought him to Raleigh, Brandon had been successful at every level from the USHL to college to the AHL. Given the opportunity at the NHL level this season, he’s proven to be a winner here, too. We are thrilled that he will continue to provide a steady presence in the crease for this team into the future," the Hurricanes general manager said.
Carolina plays winning hockey because of Bussi. He is third in wins in the NHL as the Hurricanes have 23 wins in a span of 27 games. He certainly has more to give to Coach Brind'Amour and Tulsky. Hopefully, this contract becomes a catalyst for a future Vezina Trophy run as well.
