The sinister-looking Malwyn can be tamed in ARK Survival Ascended’s Lost Colony map. Well, sort of. You can acquire one and use it in battle, but like the Solwyn, it takes a little bit more effort, and cannot be unlocked in the wild. You’ll probably see Malwyns though, being ridden by the forces of the Lost King. Thankfully, it's now clear how to add one of these to your own retinue.
We figured it would involve the Vulpite, and the brand-new Bloodforge, and we were much closer than we initially thought. It’s going to take a pretty serious grind to get a Malwyn in ARK Survival Ascended Lost Colony, but here’s what you need to know.
How to find a Malwyn in ARK Survival Ascended Lost Colony
You cannot find a Malwyn in the wild, technically speaking, in ARK Survival Ascended Lost Colony. We’ve seen them being ridden by the Lost King’s forces, but those aren’t tameable creatures. Those have already been tamed, so to speak, by the Lost King.
You can find Solwyns in any of these locations (Image via Studio Wildcard/SigmaTech72)That doesn’t mean we can’t get one of these new creatures to add to our stable of allies! As long as you’ve already at least acquired a Veilwyn, you’re close to getting a Malwyn. Below, we’ll break down how to get one of your own.
ARK Survival Ascended Lost Colony Malwyn taming guide
Unlocking the Malwyn in ARK Survival Ascended Lost Colony is similar to unlocking the Solwyn. You need to have a Veilwyn as a companion and bring it to a location where there are Solwyn creatures roaming. You can see the map in the image above. Then, you need to use the correct emote (shown over Solwyn's head) until its meter reaches 100%.
It's not too hard to get a Malwyn, but it will take a high-level character and some grinding (Image via Studio Wildcard/YouTube@Raasclark)Then, you can interact with it to claim a Pristine Vulpite. However, it does appear that you need an Ascended Pristine Vulpite, which only comes from a very high level Solwyn. You’re looking for around a level 145 Solwyn. Thankfully, you can just use a cheat command to spawn a level 150 one in, if you don’t want to wait and hunt one down:
- cheat SpawnDino "Blueprint'/Game/LostColony/Dinos/YoungIceFox/YoungIceFox_DinoCompanion_Character_BP.YoungIceFox_DinoCompanion_Character_BP'" 500 0 0 150
You also need your Veilwyn to have the Adventure! Buff at 100%. You can begin this grind by turning Companion Mode On, and then fighting enemies. Revenants appear to give the most exp towards that, in particular Alpha Revenants. Then, take the Ascended Pristine Vulpite to your Blood Forge, and make 1,000 Red Element Shards. You will need to farm up quite a bit of Red Element for that, so bring lots of Element and Blood Packs.
If you have a Desmodus, you can use it to farm piles of Blood Packs from weaker enemies, or you can use a Medic Stand with a high-health dino. Conversely, you can just put down some beds and Syringe yourself to death over and over until you have enough.
1 Red Element makes 100 Red Element Shards, so you don’t need to grind too much. Once you have everything you need, put the Ascended Pristine Vulpite into the Bloodforge’s inventory, select it, and click on Reinforce Item. This will corrupt the Vulpite.
All you have to do at this point to get a Malwyn in ARK Survival Ascended Lost Colony is to put the Corrupted Vulpite into the Veilwyn’s inventory, right click, and select Consume. If the Malwyn doesn’t appear on the screen, log out and log back in, and it’ll be there waiting for you.
What’s the console command to spawn a Malwyn in ARK Survival Ascended Lost Colony?
While you can spawn a wild Malwyn in ARK Survival Ascended Lost Colony, you will not be able to tame it. You can spawn them if you want, for whatever reason. However, we’ll give you both codes below, just in case you want them:
- Tamed: cheat gmsummon "DevilFox_Character_BP_C" 60
- Wild: cheat SpawnDino "Blueprint'/Game/LostColony/Dinos/DevilFox/DevilFox_Character_BP.DevilFox_Character_BP'" 500 0 0 150
All Malwyn abilities and controls
While the Malwyn looks gaunt and sallow in ARK Survival Ascended’s Lost Colony map, you can ride it! You need to be at least level 65 and have a Smithy to make the saddle. It requires the following ingredients:
This might be my favorite mount in the game, or certainly close to it (Image via Studio Wildcard)- Chitin/Keratin x60
- Hide x75
- Fiber x250
- Metal Ingot x180
It has much higher stats than the Solwyn, which makes sense as it is a more aggressive, violent creature compared to the peaceful, swift-moving Solwyn. What about its abilities, though? If you hold RMB while aiming at a creature, you inflict Sanguine Malediction upon it, and a meter on your screen fills up to 20/20. This makes their healing reduce per stack, and Malwyn’s attacks against that target heal your pet.
You can hold R, to pull up its ability wheel and swap to Sanguine Vulnerability for its second power. Holding RMB while aiming it at a creature make sit take extra damage per stack (up to 20/20). You can also change to the Sanguine Fatigue ability in the same fashion. Used in the same fashion, but this time, each stack puts a slowing debuff, that stacks up to 20/20. When it reaches 20 stacks, that creature can no longer fly.
You can also cycle through the abilities with Control+C, so that’s a much faster way to swap between your abilities. If that weren’t enough, the Malwyn has a teleport strike! If you hit an enemy with any of your beams, you can target an enemy and press C to teleport to them. It does seem to be that you need quite a few stacks (in the 15-20 range), but when your cursor turns green, you’re free to teleport and pounce.
The Malwyn can then become an incredible debuffer, if you have a powerful melee creature, like say, the new Ossidon. You can hang back and weaken the target dino, and let Ossidon smash it to pieces. Like the Solwyn, it’s likely that it will only breed other Veilwyns, but we don’t know for 100% sure. If you're looking for an awesome mount in ARK Survival Ascended that can debuff, and just looks cool, the Malwyn is the perfect choice.
