How to change your appearance in Where Winds Meet

Changing your appearance in Where Winds Meet is much easier than you'd think initially. Near the midway-point of the Chapter-1 main quest (Heaven Has No Pier), you'll eventually reach an underground dungeon with the Faceless Ones. After you're done with the boss encounter for this stage, an NPC here lets you "Disguise" yourself, which returns you to the character customization screen of Where Winds Meet to make changes.

Note that the actual Disguise mechanic in this game is different, and the option being called "Disguise" here is likely a localization misstep.

However, you don't actually have to do this quest to change things around on your face. It's unlocked from the very start of the game once you get out of the Bamboo Abode, only a few menu-clicks away. In this guide, we'll tell you how (as well as some important things to know).

How to edit your character appearance in Where Winds Meet

You can re-enter the character creation screen in Where Winds Meet anytime from the Appearance menu. From the pause menu, go to Appearance, and then click on the "Appearance" tab again located all the way down below the weapon cosmetic slots.

On this screen, you can find four slots each for Customization and Makeup plans. At the bottom-right corner, there's the "Edit Face" option (keybound to Spacebar on PC by default), which takes you back to the initial character customization screen with all features unlocked, save for two caveats:

  • You cannot change the hairstyle from the one you picked initially. This is done instead through hairstyle unlocks from the gacha shop or various rewards in the game.
  • You cannot change your body type (i.e. gender). This is doable from elsewhere in the Appearance menu, and we've also explained that process below.

So, here's the rub: there's two types of character edits you can make in Where Winds Meet.

Makeup-only changes (free)

If you change stuff in the "Makeup" section of the character customization menu, these can be saved as a separate "Makeup plan" on the selected Makeup plan slot, and does not cost anything.

You can therefore change everything in the Makeup category freely at any time, with the sole notable exception of Eyebrow edits. Everything else, including skin color (Foundation), facial tattoos/scars, and beards are open season.

Character edits (costs one Water Lady Script)

Changing face shape, and any other morphological changes that fall under the general "Customization" category in Where Winds Meet will require an item called Water Lady Script.

To carry forward these changes (plus Makeup changes), you'll have to save it as a "Customization Plan" on a chosen preset slot. This is where the Water Lady Script is consumed in the process, and thorugh this route, you can basically redo your entire appearance in Where Winds Meet (except gender and hairstyle, as we previously mentioned).

How to get Water Lady Scripts?

You start the game with a free Water Lady Script, and another one is granted to you during the Chapter-1 main quest. However, Water Lady Script is also available to all free-path players. You can purchase one of these from the Shop under "Items", for 200x Echo Jade apiece.

Echo Jades are not all that hard to obtain, as you get small amounts of them from completeing practically any activity in Where Winds Meet.

Here's some highly rated character customization codes, if you want a more distinct pro-forma to start editing on.

Changing your character's gender (or more precisely body type) in Where Winds Meet requires Transformation Pill, a much more expensive consumable token.

As far as we can tell, Transformation Pill is a real money-only token, and you can buy it from the Shop for 1280 Echo Beads (Pearls) apiece. In real-money terms, that's around $20 for one of these.

Once you have one of this, you can head back to the Appearance menu, and then go to More Options (V) at the bottom-left. There's a Body Type Swap option here, and this changes your gender by consuming one Transformation Pill.
