Thankfully, this is an easy process. The first step is to navigate to the desired region that needs a path. Follow these next steps:

  • Click on the region needing construction. This brings up the region menu on the left
  • Click on the Infrastructure tab and then Roads
  • This brings up available road types that can be built, including the basic Gravel Road
  • Select the region to build from and to, and the panel on the side shows all regions that the road system goes through, including costs
  • Once finalized, begin construction

Note that building roads in Europa Universalis 5 can be quite expensive; however, it is a worthy endeavor. This is because it improves Control of the region by reducing Proximity Costs to the capital, which results in increased income, levy strength, Pop assimilation, and much more. Additionally, areas with roads gain bonuses to Institution Growth, Construction Speed and Local Monthly Development Growth.

  • The Road has a loose gravel surface. Better than mud. (Movement Cost: -25%, Market Access Cost: -10%, Proximity Impact: -20, Maintenance: 0.01 Sand)

Paved Road

  • The Road has a solid paved surface which is much better for travel. (Movement Cost: -30%, Market Access Cost: -15%, Proximity Impact: -25, Maintenance: 0.01 Sand, 0.01 Masonry)

Modern Road

  • The Road has a modern flat surface and is of good quality. (Movement Cost: -35%, Market Access Cost: -20%, Proximity Impact: -30, Maintenance: 0.01 Sand, 0.01 Masonry)

Rail Road

  • The Road has been upgraded to a rail connection, massively increasing travel speed and logistics. (Movement Cost: -80%, Market Access Cost: -25%, Proximity Impact: -35, Maintenance: 0.01 Sand, 0.01 Masonry, 0.01 Steel)
