How Eagles can lock up NFC East, playoff spot in Week 16 vs. Commanders

1 hour ago 2

The Philadelphia Eagles will have an opportunity to lock up the NFC East for a second consecutive season and secure a playoff berth against the Washington Commanders in Week 16.

If you’re wondering how, you’ve come to the right place.

Eagles can win NFC East in Week 16 with win vs. Commanders or Cowboys loss

Heading into the weekend, the magic number for the Eagles to clinch the division and secure a spot in the postseason is one. That basically means win and they’re in. If the Eagles are able to pull out a victory over the Commanders on Saturday evening, their ticket will officially be punched.

Even with a loss to the Commanders, the Eagles could conceivably still win the division this weekend. That would happen if the Dallas Cowboys lose to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

In fact, the only way possible way for the Eagles to lose the division would be if they lost all three of their remaining contests and the Cowboys won all three of theirs. In that scenario, the Eagles would finish the season with a record of 9-8, while Dallas would finish 9-7-1.

While that obviously sounds like a nightmare scenario for Eagles fans, it’s extremely unlikely. There’s less than a one percent chance of that happening, per NFL.com

Here’s a look at the remaining schedule for both Philadelphia and Dallas.

Eagles remaining opponents:

  • Washington Commanders (4-10)
  • Buffalo Bills (10-4)
  • Washington Commanders (4-10)

Cowboys remaining opponents:

  • Los Angeles Chargers (10-4)
  • Washington Commanders (4-10)
  • New York Giants (2-12)

If the Eagles are able to best the Commanders, the Cowboys would be eliminated from contention before they even take the field on Sunday.

Obviously, the sooner the better for the Eagles when it comes to securing their spot. If they’re able to lock up the division and a playoff berth this weekend it could potentially afford them an opportunity to rest some key contributors over the final two weeks of the regular season.
