How Chicago White Sox are impacted by new MLB salary cap and floor

The Chicago White Sox are having a surprisingly fun 2026 season so far. Munetaka Murakami looks like a superstar, Davis Martin is a Cy Young candidate, and the White Sox as a team are 28-27, 1.5 games up for a wild card spot.

What makes this season even more impressive is that the White Sox weren't supposed to be legitimate contenders this season, as it was a rebuilding year with some big question marks all across the roster. But this team is good right now, and yet, they could get better.

According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, Major League Baseball shared its proposal for a new salary cap and floor, which is very noteworthy during the 2027 CBA negotiations. And this new salary cap would have a big impact on the White Sox.

How White Sox would be impacted by MLB salary cap

"The salary floor for teams beginning in 2027 would be set at $171.2 million, which includes player benefits, with the ceiling at $245.3 million," Rogers reports.

While teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and New York Mets would need to shed payroll, the opposite is true for the White Sox.

According to Spotrac.com, the White Sox currently have a payroll of $110,267,330, which is significantly below the proposed floor for teams that could begin in 2027.

The White Sox would need to add roughly $61.1 million to their payroll to reach this proposed floor. That's a lot of money to add to a team in one offseason.

But, if they could sign someone like Tarik Skubal in free agency, and then add a few other players, or even extend Murakami to a massive long-term deal, the White Sox could get to that $171.2 million floor in no time.

For White Sox fans, a salary floor would result in a very exciting offseason where the white Sox have to spend, while some of the other top spenders have to shed payroll.

This proposal is the first one made by MLB, and there's still plenty of time for this range to change. But, this first proposal does likely indicate that the White Sox are going to have to spend a bit more money in the very near future.
