Indiana head football coach Curt Cignetti is sticking around the Big Ten for the long term. His eight-year, $64 million contract will allow him to stick around Bloomington long enough to take the Hoosiers to further heights.
Cignetti's team is currently unbeaten. Riding high off a 10-0 start for the first time in program history, a significant challenge awaits against No. 2 Ohio State next Saturday in Columbus. A win there puts the Hoosiers in the driver's seat for a matchup with Oregon, though easier said than done.
Cignetti, similar to his "I win, Google me," comments, kept his remarks brief when he gave his reaction to the news.
"We're the emerging superpower in college football. Why would I leave?" Cignetti asked.
Hoosiers head football coach Curt Cignetti proving loyalty to Indiana
Most Power Four coaches test the waters. Cignetti won't be, and that should excite Big Ten and Indiana fans. The Hoosiers are winning in a multitude of ways. Whether it's the offense scoring 40-plus or a knockdown, grind-out win like the Michigan home win last week, Indiana is getting the job done.
It's hard to find a better story in college football, much less one that isn't coming from the likes of Alabama, Michigan, USC, Texas, or another historically well-known program.
The Hoosiers still have more work to do, but the storybook ending, if there ever was one, is for them to represent one-half of the conference in the Big Ten title game – in Indianapolis, no less.
Indiana has to take it one game at a time, but their historic season is far from over. To some, it may be just beginning.
The kickoff against the Buckeyes is at noon ET on FOX, which is part of "Big Noon Saturday."
