Hendrick Motorsports rookie Corey Day put up a mammoth effort and finished second in his debut dirt race at Perth Motorplex. The Californian shared his reaction to the 'nonstop feature' that saw him overcoming 26 drivers.
Day has been tapped for an HMS ride in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series next year. Nonetheless, the 20-year-old has been racking up impressive stats ahead of his rookie season.
Just last month, he won his second consecutive Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ventura Raceway in California. Notably, Kyle Larson also competed in the event, but he couldn't break into the top-5, while Day became the first driver to score consecutive wins in the event since Christopher Bell.
This time around, Day tried his hand at High Limit Racing's debut showdown in Australia. Starting 28th, he ultimately finished 2.7 seconds behind two-time USAC National Midget Champion Michael Kofoid. Following the same, Day posted his reaction on X, writing,
"First night in the books down under, and it was a wild one. P28 👉 P2 in a non stop feature. Ready to go with High Limit starting Sunday."Corey Day will also be vying for FloRacing's dirt race with High Limit International. Kyle Larson will be defending his title at the richest sprint car race, which pays out $110,000 to the victor. The three-day battle is scheduled from Sunday to Tuesday.
Jeff Gordon explains reasoning behind Corey Day's signing
Jeff Gordon pointed to Corey Day's dirt racing roots as a deciding factor in signing him for 2026. Gordon believes dirt racers have an intuitive mind to racing that can be replicated on pavement tracks.
"Every race that Corey has been in, he's the first guy to start searching for different lines and different ways to pass. He's never afraid to try things. I think that's what gravitates us towards a dirt driver. That's a skill set that you can't teach people. They have to get that experience, and usually it's on dirt that they learn that. Once you learn that, you're going to adapt to pavement and other types of cars," Gordon said.Corey Day addressed the coveted drive and said,
"The opportunity to race full time for Mr. Hendrick and Hendrick Motorsports is something I’ve been working toward and feel I’m ready for."Veteran crew chief Adam Wall will lead Day's No.17 team next year. In his eleven part-time starts with HMS, Corey Day has finished twice in the top-10, with his best result coming from a P4 finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. However, his qualifying is yet to match up, as he broke into the top-10 only twice, including his debut at Martinsville Speedway and at Charlotte Roval. He finished outside the top-20 on both occasions.
