The Detroit Lions are playing in their second preseason game versus the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, and the contest is a massive opportunity for quarterback Hendon Hooker to create some separation from Kyle Allen in the QB2 debate.
Hooker didn't receive many opportunities in the Hall of Fame game last week against the Los Angeles Chargers, and didn't look great in the limited snaps he played. However, the Tennessee product got the nod as the starter for Friday's matchup versus Atlanta, but his play still left a lot to be desired.
Hooker fumbled twice and posted just 38 passing yards on seven completions during his time in the game. Both fumbles resulted in Lions' turnovers, and fans are starting to give up on the 27-year-old signal-caller, who was pulled during the final minutes of the second quarter for Kyle Allen.
"I can no longer defend Hendon Hooker as a Lions draft pick …….. with upside. Hooker resembles nothing of the quarterback I saw at Tennessee. Zero pocket presence. A wasted pick," NFL writer Jay Clemson said on X.
"Me being a Detroit lions fan its time to let go hendon hooker man fr," X user BIG_Smoove4 said.
"Dan Campbell has the look of a coach who has seen enough of Hendon Hooker...and not in a good way," 97.1 The Ticket's Marc Ryan said on X.
"Obviously it’s just preseason but man Hendon Hooker is not good," X user McR1B69 said.
Hooker still has a few more chances to show he deserves a spot on Detroit's roster. However, the 2023 third-round pick has been uninspiring thus far, and his poor play is a cause for concern for head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, who may have to rethink the backup quarterback position.
