Kevin Love is arguably the most interesting veteran still available on the market because, while he may not play significant minutes, he can still provide tremendous value to a team. Love has had a historic career and will likely choose a destination where he believes he can make the biggest impact.
At the beginning of free agency, Love was expected to join the Philadelphia 76ers. There were reports that he wanted to reunite with former teammate LeBron James.
“Kevin Love wants to join the Sixers, which would reunite him with LeBron James before retirement, per mcten. Philadelphia must waive or trade a player, if they want to sign Love before the season begins," NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
More recently, Love has been linked to a potential return to the Minnesota Timberwolves, where his NBA career began.
“From what I understand, Kevin Love is open to coming back to Minnesota," said Jon Krawczynski on a recent episode of his Jon Krawczynski Show podcast. "I do think the Wolves have some interest in bringing him back as well. It would just be a phenomenal story if the Wolves did decide to fill that spot, and they did it with Kevin Love."
Love would make sense on several teams because of what he can provide away from the box score. He could serve as a veteran mentor and locker-room presence, which is exactly why SI’s Tom Dierberger believes he could land with the Miami Heat.
“His playing time was limited and his production even more so—not at all a surprise for a 38-year-old forward with this many miles on his legs. Love seems like a great hang (especially on the golf course) but his days of being an effective NBA player are well in the rearview mirror. Of course, his complete willingness to embrace being an end-of-bench locker room voice in Utah means he can still offer something of value to interested teams. Chemistry is a key component of professional sports. Nevertheless, Love should wind up on a roster for next season if he wants. Every team can use a good locker room guy. The veteran could be valuable on a team with a mix of established stars and younger players. In Miami, he could bring a wealth of experience while also helping challenge players such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo in practice. More than anything, Love's voice and championship experience are qualities that teams can benefit from having around.
Love has made $277 million throughout his career and won an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers a decade ago. A move to Miami would make sense for a number of reasons, especially if Love is looking for an opportunity to contribute to a competitive team while taking on a veteran leadership role.
