Knicks predicted to sign $15M explosive former first-rounder to revive career around Jalen Brunson

The New York Knicks are coming off their first NBA championship in a long time and are looking to go back-to-back. New York is led by Jalen Brunson, who has established himself as one of the best guards in the league.

The Knicks still have plenty of opportunities to add to their roster, but it is simply a matter of deciding who they want to bring in next. New York currently has five total roster spots available to fill.

“New York has two standard spots remaining and all three two-way contract slots open,” Rookie Wires’ Mack Baltes wrote.

With the depth already on the roster, New York has plenty of flexibility when deciding who to sign. The Knicks could add an experienced veteran or take a chance on a young player looking to develop his game. Daily Knicks’ Dan Favale believes New York should take a chance on Cam Whitmore.

“Let him prove himself inside a championship infrastructure. They have the on- and off-court dynamics to remake him. If it all goes to you-know-what, the Knicks can move on. No muss, no fuss. But if it works out, they may just stumble into their next, perhaps most impactful, stab-in-the-dark success story,” Favale wrote.

Whitmore has already bounced around during his relatively short NBA career. Most recently, he was waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers after being acquired in a five-team trade.

“The Cleveland Cavaliers have waived Cam Whitmore, league sources told hoopshype. Whitmore, the 20th pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, has averaged 10.5 points on 45% from the field and 35% from 3-point range in 17.3 minutes during three NBA seasons with the Rockets and Wizards,” HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto wrote.

Whitmore has plenty of talent, but he has not yet been able to put everything together and prove to an organization that he can consistently maximize his abilities. With the Knicks, however, he could have an opportunity to learn from Brunson and several experienced veterans while playing in a championship environment.

Whitmore was on a $15 million rookie contract before being waived by Cleveland. New York is looking to add depth to its roster, but the team would also like players who have the potential to develop into meaningful contributors. Under the right leadership and in the right environment, Whitmore could have an opportunity to turn his career around.
