The New York Mets might have little to play for in the final month of the 2026 MLB season, but that doesn't make it any less important for the players.
Seeing how the young player performs could dictate how the Mets set up their roster next year and beyond. For catcher Francisco Alvarez, who was mentioned in trade rumors at the MLB trade deadline, this final month might determine if he's a Met beyond 2026.
Well, after his two-homer night on Friday against the San Francisco Giants, he's making a strong case to stay in New York. As Sarah Langs shared, that two-homer game for Alvarez actually joined two Hall of Fame catchers with some rare MLB history as well.

Carter and Bench are two Hall of Famers, and they're both among the best to ever play the position. To join them in any kind of history is very impressive.
This statistic for Alvarez is quite the feat to accomplish, as he's proven himself to be one of the best power-hitting backstops in the game, and arguably in MLB history as well.
He's 24 years old and will be 25 after the 2026 MLB season comes to a close. Alvarez already has tied Carter with seven multi-homer games among catchers under 25 years old.

With 21 more games to go in the 2026 MLB season, he needs to have one more multi-homer game to tie Bench for the most such games for a catcher under 25 years old. Add one more after that for nine such games in his career, and it's an MLB record.
Since making his debut at 20 years old back in 2022, Alvarez has been quite the player for the Mets. He has 4.0 bWAR with 63 homers, including 15 this season, 11 in back-to-back seasons in 2024 and 2025, and a career-high 25-homer season in 2023.
This is some cool and rare history for Alvarez to join with his seventh multi-homer game in his MLB career. Being associated with Bench and Carter is quite the feat, especially in a statistic as clear-cut as this one.
He will have a chance to become the first catcher under 25 years old to have nine multi-homer games, but with just 21 games to go, he'll need to go on a tear to end the 2026 season if he wants the record. But considering his power, it's not impossible.
