Steph Curry played a huge role in the Golden State Warriors’ 16-point comeback win on Wednesday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 125-120. However, his season-best performance felt underappreciated. One moment in particular frustrated fans, especially because of what a Spurs announcer said about Curry’s frequent trips to the free-throw line.
During the game, Curry stepped up for his 13th free throw of the night. One Spurs announcer pointed out that Curry had taken more free throws than the entire Spurs team. His broadcast partner then compared Curry to players who make regular trips to the foul line, calling out Luka Doncic and James Harden as examples.
“He's like, you know, Luka Doncic, James Harden, guys like that where you just got to be extremely careful when you're going to their shot or they're penetrating," the announcer said. "They know how to draw fouls and get to the foul line.”•

The comment left fans enraged. Many on social media argued that putting Curry in with those players did not make sense. They pointed out that, unlike Harden and Doncic, Curry rarely receives superstar treatment from officials and that he often gets fewer foul calls than he deserves.
“He’s actually delusional 🤣,” @Formula1cut said. “Embarrassing smh. Everybody knows Steph has a horrible whistle,” @anxiousdubsfan wrote. “He should be ashamed to say that, my boy never gets the whistle,” @Mattspinos4 said. “If curry had the same whistle as these guys he would put wilt numbers,” @Pedro30HIM wrote. “What an idiot.. especially since this announcer watched the spurs beat the warriors for like 20 straight season in San Antonio, so he should know how the warriors and Steph usually doesn’t get any whistles,” @AndrewSanoff said. “warriors fans prayed for times like this,” @mdp_47 said.Steph Curry ended the night with 16 free throw attempts and made 15 of them, en route to a 46-point explosion. He added five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The 16 free throw attempts were his highest in a single game since he took 19 during the 2020-2021 season.
Is it fair to compare Steph Curry to Luka Doncic and James Harden as a frequent free-throw shooter?
Steph Curry is the most efficient free-throw shooter in league history with a 91.2% FT across his decorated career. Still, it is not really fair to compare how often he gets to the line with players like James Harden or Luka Doncic.
For perspective, Curry has averaged only 4.3 free throw attempts per game throughout his career. Doncic and Harden are almost at double that pace, sitting at 8.3 and 8.2 attempts per game, respectively.
Even this season, when Steph Curry is up to 5.1 attempts per game, which is his highest average since the 2020-2021 season, he is only 35th in the league in free-throw attempts per game. Harden is at 6.1 attempts and holds the 26th spot. Meanwhile, Luka Doncic sits at the top of the league with 11.7 attempts per game.
