Which team does Neymar play for in World Cup?
After being born in the Mogi das Cruzes region of Sao Paulo, Neymar plays his international football for Brazil, including at the World Cup.
He has appeared in three World Cup tournaments for the Selecao, making his debut in 2014 on home soil.
Has Neymar won the World Cup?
Despite being the star man within a being a powerhouse of world international football, Neymar has not won a World Cup yet in his career.
After the Selecao were dumped out of the Qatar tournament by Croatia on penalties in the 2022 quarterfinals, he will not have another chance to do so until the 2026 competition joint-hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Neymar has only won one major trophy with the Brazil senior team, being the 2013 Confederations Cup. He was part of the squad that finished runners-up in the 2021 Copa America to Argentina, and has also won an Olympic gold medal in football, though this was with the Under-23's side.
Famously, Neymar was not part of the Brazil team that won the 2019 Copa America, as he was absent due to an ankle injury.
Neymar World Cup stats

Neymar has played in three World Cup competitions for Brazil in his career, failing to lift the trophy in any of them.
His career encompasses the current run of five World Cup tournaments without a title, which is Brazil's longest-ever run, making Neymar's international career one of unprecedented disappointment for the Selecao. Brazil have won five World Cup titles in their history, more than any other country around the world, but their last came back in 2002.

Neymar World Cup games played
Through his three World Cup appearances, Neymar has taken the field in 13 games.
Five of those have been knockout stage games, where he has excelled, suffering just one regulation defeat and one on a penalty shootout.
It's been the games Neymar was not fit enough to take the field that have defined his career. Injury in the 2014 World Cup ruled him out of the eventual humiliation at the hands of Germany, while he also suffered an ankle injury at the 2022 World Cup which saw him miss two group games and inhibited his performance the rest of the way.
Neymar World Cup wins
Neymar has a remarkable record in the 13 World Cup games he has seen the field.
In regulation play, the Brazilian has contested eight victories, four draws, and just one defeat. That results in a win rate of 62%, with just an 8% defeat figure.
Two of those draws were in knockout stage games, resulting in a penalty shootout. One of those saw Brazil emerge victories, defeating Chile in the 2014 Round of 16, while the other saw Brazil suffer defeat, coming in the 2022 quarterfinals against Croatia.
Neymar World Cup goals
Neymar has scored eight goals across his 13 career World Cup matches, with another four assists, giving him 12 total goal contributions.
He has never scored a hat-trick at the World Cup, but does have two braces, coming in his first three career World Cup matches in 2014 on home soil against Croatia and Cameroon.
Overall in his international career, Neymar has scored 79 career goals, ranking him first all-time for Brazil. With a brace against Bolivia in 2023, Neymar broke the nation's career goal-scoring record previously held by the legendary Pele.
Neymar World Cup awards
Neymar's only individual World Cup award came at the 2014 tournament in his native Brazil, where he won the Bronze Boot for third-top goal scorer at the competition.
Despite finding himself injured and out of the semifinals, his four goals and one assist were enough to leave him on the podium, behind only Thomas Muller and Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez. He finished level on goals with Lionel Messi and Robin van Persie, but won the award thanks to a better goals-per-minute ratio, in part because he missed time with the injury.
Neymar World Cup history
2014 World Cup
In his first-ever World Cup, Neymar was part of the Brazil squad that reached the semifinals on home soil in 2014, but injury infamously ruled him out of that game. Brazil were subsequently humiliated 7-1 against Germany in one of the most remarkable World Cup moments in history.
Things shaped up well for Brazil early, as they defeated Croatia and Cameroon in group stage play behind braces from Neymar in both games. A scoreless draw with Mexico was sandwiched between, but Brazil topped the group on goal differential anyways.
In the knockout stage, Brazil passed a difficult pair of tests against fellow South American opponents as they defeated Chile on penalties in the Round of 16 before a 2-1 victory over Colombia. Neymar scored Brazil's fifth and final penalty in the shootout against Chile, and he assisted the opening goal against Colombia, but an 88th minute injury left him out of the semifinal, where Brazil were thrashed in a game that was painted in the host nation as nothing short of a national disaster.
2018 World Cup
With a healthy Neymar on the field once again in the 2018 World Cup, Brazil would open the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland, but finished strong with 2-0 victories over both Costa Rica and Serbia to top their group.
Neymar scored and assisted goals in a 2-0 win over Mexico in the Round of 16, as things were looking bright for Brazil heading into a quarterfinal matchup against Belgium's famous "golden generation." There, it would come undone again as the European side would go 2-0 up by the half-hour mark, and Neymar was unable to engineer a comeback, falling by a 2-1 score and ending the dream well short of the goal.
2022 World Cup
Neymar was back to give the World Cup another go at the 2022 tournament in Russia, where Brazil were drawn with familiar opponents. They begin with another 2-0 win over Serbia, but Neymar again picked up an ankle injury in the later stages of the match, which would mar his World Cup journey once again.
He missed the final two group games, with Brazil beating Switzerland 1-0 before falling 1-0 to Cameroon in the finale. The defeat did little to knock their position atop the standings, winning the group on goal differential and drawing South Korea in the Round of 16.
Neymar returned and looked his usual self, scoring a goal and assisting another in a 4-1 win, but it would all come crashing down in the quarterfinals again. They drew 2018 finalists Croatia, and while Neymar found the back of the net once again, scoring in extra-time to put his country ahead, Brazil were stunned by a 117th minute equalizer from Bruno Petkovic.
In the ensuing shootout, Brazil head coach Tite would be criticized heavily for his decision to put Neymar fifth in the order, and after Rodrygo and Marquinhos both missed their efforts, the star forward never even got a chance to take a penalty, as Brazil were already eliminated.

How many World Cups has Brazil won?
Brazil are the most decorated nation in the history of the FIFA World Cup, winning five all-time World Cup titles across the competition's lifespan.
They won their first back in 1958, as a teenage Pele emerged as an international icon. They would repeat as champions four years later in 1962, and after a disappointing group stage exit in 1966, they would again triumph in 1970.
It would take 24 years to return to the summit of international football, but Romario would lead Brazil to the promised land in 1994 on U.S. soil. They would triumph again eight years later in 2002 behind a superstar performance from Ronaldo Nazario, which still stands as Brazil's last World Cup title.
Is 2026 Neymar's last World Cup?
While Neymar is expected to appear in his fourth World Cup tournament in 2026, he still has a road ahead to prove he is a viable option for Carlo Ancelotti's side.
Set to turn 34 before the 2026 World Cup commences, it's believed a near-certainty that 2026 will be Neymar's last chance at international glory, if he even proves fit and available to participate and is selected.
The Brazil star has struggled with injuries over the last number of years, with ankle problems giving way to a run of knee issues.
As one of the most fouled players in the world during his prime years, the repeated physical punishment took a toll, leading to a run of ankle injuries which stunted his final years at Paris Saint-Germain. Those gave way to persistent knee problems when he tore his ACL in October of 2023, the first year of his contract at Saudi side Al Hilal. Since joining Brazilian club Santos in early 2025, he has been beset by repeated hamstring concerns.
Even before all that, Neymar hinted at the start of the 2022 World Cup that it could be his last FIFA tournament, telling Globo: "I can't guarantee that I'll play another [World] Cup. I honestly don't know." So it's hard to believe he would be a realistic option come 2030.
😢 Neymar said last year that this #FIFAWorldCup would be his last.

But, given that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are considered likely to appear in their sixth World Cup tournament at ages 38 and 41 respectively, it's impossible to completely rule out Neymar's presence down the road.
