Guardians pull off outrageous doubleheader feat with back-to-back walk-off wins

The Cleveland Guardians did not simply sweep a doubleheader Friday. They found the most dramatic way imaginable to win both games. Cleveland defeated the Detroit Tigers twice at Progressive Field, with each victory ending on a walk-off hit. Brayan Rocchio completed an incredible individual performance with a ninth-inning homer in the opener before Travis Bazzana delivered a game-winning single in the 10th inning of the nightcap.

Doubleheader, double walk-off victories.

The extraordinary day began with Cleveland falling into a 6-1 hole. Detroit scored four runs in the first inning, added another in the second and received Spencer Torkelson’s solo homer in the third.

Then Rocchio completely changed the game.

Cleveland scored five times in the fourth, with Rocchio launching his first career grand slam to tie the score. He returned to the plate in the bottom of the ninth and ended the game with a solo homer, giving the Guardians a 7-6 victory.

Rocchio became only the sixth player in MLB history to hit a grand slam and a walk-off home run in the same game, according to the Associated Press. Former Boston Red Sox slugger Jack Clark was the most recent player to accomplish the feat, doing so in 1991.

Travis Bazzana gives Guardians an improbable encore

Matching the drama from the opener seemed impossible. Cleveland somehow did it anyway. Detroit carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, putting the Guardians in danger of settling for a doubleheader split. Bazzana responded with a game-tying two-run homer.

Neither team scored in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings.

Rocchio again became part of Cleveland’s decisive rally in the 10th. After moving into scoring position, he raced home on Bazzana’s single to give the Guardians a 4-3 victory and complete the remarkable sweep. Bazzana finished the nightcap with three of Cleveland’s eight hits and drove in three of its four runs. His homer and walk-off single produced the tying and winning runs in a game the Guardians trailed for most of the night.

The sweep carried significant postseason consequences. Cleveland improved to 72-70 and remained in control of the final American League wild-card position. Detroit fell to 64-77 after blowing leads in both games.

The Tigers held a combined eight runs of advantage during the doubleheader and still left Progressive Field without a victory.

Cleveland, meanwhile, turned a potentially disastrous day into one of the most memorable moments of the 2026 MLB season. One doubleheader. Two comeback victories. Two different walk-off heroes.

Even Hollywood might have considered that ending a little excessive.
