Team India T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill put up a scratchy innings of 46 balls off 39 deliveries in the fourth contest against Australia in Gold Coast on Thursday, November 6. The opener could not assert himself over the course of the innings, and ultimately ended up with a strike rate of only 117.95, before being castled by Nathan Ellis in the 15th over.
Shubman Gill, coming into the fourth T20I, on the back of some poor outings in the series so far, managed to score boundaries on a regular basis in the powerplay, with Abhishek Sharma also taking a while to unleash. However, the boundaries completely dried up in the middle overs as the vice-captain scored only one boundary after the fifth over, which came moments before his dismissal.
He eventually had to pick the ante up as the settled batter with Suryakumar Yadav also looked to explode from the word go ahead of the death overs.
However, fans were extremely critical of how Gill went about his innings. They accused the star player of stat-padding to ease pressure off him amid scrutiny regarding his lack of runs in T20Is in recent times. Here are some of the reactions on social media.
Gill is excused from strike rate-intent arguments in T20Is? I never see him going as aggressively as others are doing in current team and Sanju used to do in his absence.
Back to back sixes for Suryakumar Yadav on a pitch where Shubman Gill is not even trying to hit a boundary. I have never seen this kind of statpadding inning ever!! Sometimes players get stuck but here Gill is not even trying & deliberately playing like this!
What’s the point of such a long batting when our opener Shubman Gill plays tuk-tuk for 10–12 overs as if we’ve already lost 6 wickets. #INDvsAUS
So, we were told by captain & coach that this Indian team will play fearless aggressive selfless cricket. But Shubman Gill who is a complete failure since Asia Cup is now statpadding like Babar Azam here, rn on 30 runs off 25 balls. They are basically forcing Gill upon fans!!
Atrocious innings from Shubman Gill. That's too long a streak of mediocre performances. Need Jaiswal in the T20 team for the next series at all cost and him in the playing 11. #INDvsAUS
I hope the experiment named Shubman Gill in T20s is put to an end after this. He can be generational or not, He can smash the IPL bowlers or not, I don't want to see him in T20s for being this boring in 2025 🙏🙏
Team India collapse in an ugly fashion after Shubman Gill's dismissal in AUS vs IND 2025 4th T20I
The Men in Blue's score read 121-3 after Shubman Gill's dismissal ahead of the death overs. The team proceeded to crumble even further as Suryakumar Yadav, Jitesh Sharma, and Tilak Varma were dismissed in quick succession as the score worsened to 136-6 in the 17th over.
At the time of writing, the all-rounder pair of Washington Sundar and Axar Patel are attempting to stretch India's first innings score.
Both teams are on the lookout to secure a win in the penultimate clash of the series to attain an unassailable 2-1 lead with a game to spare.
