The San Francisco Giants entered the 2025-2026 MLB offseason with a clear goal of adding to their starting rotation.
Justin Verlander was a free agent, and there were some clear spots open behind Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Landen Roup.
They signed Adrian Houser to a two-year, $22 million deal, and now, according to Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are signing a veteran starter, Tyler Mahle, to a one-year deal.
Giants to sign former Rangers, Twins, Reds vet starter
"Source: The Giants are close to signing right-handed starter Tyler Mahle to a one-year deal," Robin reported on New Year's Day.
Mahle is a nine-year MLB veteran who's spent the last two seasons with the Rangers. This past season, he had a 2.18 ERA in 16 starts, though he didn't pitch a full season. In 2024, he made just three starts with a 4.97 ERA.
Before his Rangers stint, Mahle was with the Minnesota Twins for a season and a half, posting a 3.64 ERA over nine starts for the Twins in parts of the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Be began his MLB career with the Cincinnati Reds, where he posted a 4.35 ERA across 114 games from 2017 through four games into 2022.

Mahle's been banged up the last few years of his MLB career, but when he's healthy, he's a quality starting pitcher.
This reported one-year deal is a quality addition for the Giants as they explore cheap options to bolster their rotation this offseason.
Instead of signing one of the top names, in a Framber Valdez, Ranger Suarez, or Zac Gallen, the Giants are opting for a rental of Mahle, in hopes he can pitch a full season at the clip he showed in 2025 with the Rangers.
The Giants are continuing to add to their rotation this offseason, with this latest move coming in the form of nine-year MLB veteran Tyler Mahle.
