The Buffalo Bills announced that Mecole Hardman Jr. had returned to the team after signing him to the practice squad on Tuesday. The veteran wide receiver and return specialist was released from the Bills’ active roster two days earlier.

The 27-year-old receiver has bounced between the practice squad and active roster for the Bills this season. He signed with the team on Nov. 10 and earning a promotion to the active roster on Nov. 15.

Hardman responded to his return to the Bills’ practice squad by posting a five-word message on social media.

Signed midseason to address roster needs following a quiet trade deadline, Hardman had an encouraging start with the Bills but missed a month due to injury and hasn’t been able to contribute much since returning.

Hardman has one target and no catches in 2025. During the 2024 season, he played 12 games for the Chiefs, catching 12 passes for 90 yards, rushing five times for 62 yards and a touchdown, while also returning 20 punts for 203 yards and five kickoffs for 132 yards.

It appears the Bills appreciate Hardman's versatility and his veteran experience, especially with the playoffs approaching, making him a logical addition to their practice squad.

Mecole Hardman's Bills role uncertain for the rest of the season

After signing with the Buffalo Bills in November, Mecole Hardman electrified fans with a 61-yard kickoff return in his first game. Shortly after, a calf injury forced him to miss significant time.

While the former Kansas City Chiefs receiver was sidelined, Ray Davis shined in the return game. He’s now averaging 30.7 yards per kickoff, the best in the league, and recorded a 97-yard touchdown against the Houston Texans in Week 12.

The Bills now have an additional return option with Hardman back, though Davis is expected to continue as the primary kickoff returner. Hardman could see time as the team’s punt returner. Khalil Shakir has been strong in that role, but with Hardman available, the Bills could keep Shakir focused on his wide receiver duties, saving him for the postseason push.

Hardman’s career punt return average sits at 9.0 yards, though he’s recorded just four yards on two punt returns for the Bills in 2025. His extensive playoff experience, however, could prove invaluable as Buffalo heads into the postseason.

Having won three Super Bowls with the Chiefs, Hardman has proven he can deliver in high-pressure moments, including the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl clash with the San Francisco 49ers two seasons ago.
