Giants rumors reveal specific reason for John Harbaugh contract hold up

2 hours ago 2

It has been a few days since we learned that the New York Giants were expected to hire John Harbaugh as their next head coach.

However, as another day passed on Friday, there is still no confirmation from the Giants that Harbaugh has been hired.

As we suspected, the hold up is contract-related, and more specifically over language in Harbaugh's deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

But what language, exactly?

According to both Ralph Vacchiano of FOX Sports and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it's about "reporting structure."

As The Athletic's Dan Duggan reported, Harbaugh reported directly to ownership during his years with the Baltimore Ravens, so it would appear that he wants that same structure with the Giants instead of reporting to general manager Joe Schoen.

However, as Duggan notes, the Giants don't historically do things that way, so that's likely holding things up.

"As the Giants-John Harbaugh negotiations continue, here’s a nugget that I’ve learned: Harbaugh didn’t report to the GM in Baltimore. He reported directly to owner Steve Bisciotti," Duggan wrote. "That hasn’t been the Giants’ chain of command historically. Getting a sense for why this hasn’t been a simple process."

By all accounts, there is no indication the Giants' deal with Harbaugh is in danger of being derailed, so fans can breathe easy.

We get it, the Giants might be a bit hesitant to stray from what they've always known, but this is a very unique situation with Harbaugh being the most accomplished coach the team has ever hired.

At this point, the Giants should just give Harbaugh whatever he wants.

In no way, shape or form should the Giants be worried about what Schoen thinks in this situation after the last four years. He should just be happy he still has a job.

If Schoen doesn't like it, we would kindly show him the door.
