Giants have 2 players 'likely to be moved' before trade deadline

The San Francisco Giants probably weren't thinking they'd be hanging out in similar standings positioning to the Colorado Rockies this season.

But there they are, just about as likely as the Rockies to be trade deadline sellers. It's not an ideal situation at all for a team that would've viewed itself as a contender.

"The Giants and Rockies were the only teams more than seven games out of a playoff spot entering the week, and given the National League’s performance this season -- 11 of 15 teams have winning records -- it seems unlikely that either San Francisco or Colorado will climb back into the race," MLB.com's Mark Feinsand wrote in a new article on Tuesday.

Feinsand was writing that in the context of which teams might be obvious candidates to give up veteran players before the trade deadline, and the Giants definitely fit the bill.

He goes on to reference Robbie Ray and Luis Arraez as the most logical departures, given that they're on expiring contracts.

"The Giants have some impending free agents, including Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray, who figure to be moved, but could San Francisco try to do a bigger reset and trade some of its bigger contracts?" Feinsand writes.

Ray is a former Cy Young winner with great strikeout stuff, so that'll always have appeal to contending teams, no matter what exact level he's pitching at this season.

The contact wizard Arraez has actually helped his cause a bit this season by showing improved defense at second base. If another team believes in the improvements made with the glove, he could be viewed as a really solid addition.

The Giants also have some hefty, longer-term contracts that probably wouldn't be easy to move, but it'll be fascinating to see if any particular rumors pop up as the deadline gets closer.

For now, all that's clear is that the Giants seem to have really messed up their chances this season with a roster that on paper seemed to have plenty of talent
