Giants-Colts trade prediction gives Indianapolis some Daniel Jones insurance

3 hours ago 1

The Indianapolis Colts are likely to be in the market for a backup quarterback for starter Daniel Jones after losing Anthony Richardson to an injury.

Richardson suffered a fractured orbital bone in a bizarre pre-game mishap, which leaves the 5-1 Colts with a rookie backup in Riley Leonard. With Jones' injury history, the Colts should strongly consider making a move.

In what would be a hilarious trade, ESPN's Bill Barnwell predicts the team Jones was cut loose by last year, the New York Giants, will move quarterback Russell Wilson to the Colts for a 2026 seventh-round pick.

We've also seen Jones look much better after leaving the Giants to join the Colts (after a brief stop in Minnesota last season). I wouldn't expect the same sort of leap out of Wilson, but could he be a passable starter if the Colts need someone to step in? It wouldn't be expensive to find out: Indianapolis would be giving up only a seventh-round pick and would owe Wilson about $1.3 million over the remainder of 2025, which will likely be the 36-year-old's final season of professional football.

While this trade would make us chuckle considering the history with Jones and the Giants, it does make sense for both teams.

Even when Richardson returns, we know how erratic and unreliable he is, so this isn't just about having Leonard as a backup.

Wilson may not be what he once was, but he is probably a better option than both young quarterbacks if Indy needs someone to step in for a game or two.

The Giants have fully moved to Jaxson Dart and they still have Jameis Winston, who I would be more inclined to target over Wilson if I were the Colts.

Nevertheless, New York should unload its surplus of backup signal-callers and with Wilson being on a one-year deal, he's more likely to be moved than Winston, who is under contract in 2026 and can serve as Dart's backup once again.

Whether they trade for Wilson or Winston, the Colts would be improving their backup situation with either one and should pull the trigger.
