McLaren suffered a double DSQ at the Las Vegas GP as both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri's MCL39s were found to be running with lower plank thickness than permitted in the regulations. Subsequently, with the drivers' championship seemingly thrown wide open, fans shared their take on the whole saga over social media.
Norris had started the Las Vegas GP on pole, while Piastri was down in fifth. The pair didn't have much progress during the race as the Briton botched his lead on the opening lap and allowed Max Verstappen to take command of the race and never look back.
Similarly, Piastri lost ground on the opening lap and went the entire race to make up for lost positions to finish fifth on the road, which would have been a fourth-place result after Kimi Antonelli's penalty. However, disaster struck at the papaya garage as both cars were found to have lower skidblock thickness, which resulted in an inevitable disqualification.
Fans then reacted to the shenanigans that went down in Las Vegas, as they wrote on X:
"Frame it hang it on the louvre."Frame it hang it on the louvre
Fans further looked at how this has helped Verstappen increase his chances in the drivers' championship battle:
"Guess they took 'racing on a knife edge' a bit too literally with the floor," one netizen wrote. "We have a chance boys," another netizen shared while referring to Max Verstappen's chance of winning the 2025 drivers' title. "Simply lovely," another netizen wrote.Meanwhile, after the initial summons, the announcement regarding Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri's disqualification took unusually long.
McLaren tried to bail Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri out of the imminent disqualification
McLaren's Lando Norris (L) and Oscar Piastri (R) - Source: GettyThe time between the summons and the final verdict by the stewards had left the paddock to conspire about what was going on between McLaren and the FIA. This was made clear by the governing body in the decision that they released for both cars, as the papaya squad had tried to argue their case in front of the stewards.
The decision document revealed:
"The Team argued that mitigating circumstances existed in that there was additional and unexpected porpoising at this event, limited opportunity to test due to the weather on Day 1, and shortened practice sessions. Further the Team submitted that the degree of the breach was lower than prior breaches of this regulation in 2025." "The FIA argued that unfortunately there was no provision in the regulations or in precedent for any penalty other than the usual penalty (i.e. disqualification)."In a nutshell, this means Max Verstappen is now tied up with Oscar Piastri in the championship standings and has a 24-point deficit to Lando Norris, who is currently leading the drivers' table.
