The Detroit Tigers have called up shortstop Trey Sweeney ahead of their game against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
According to The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen, Sweeney is in Detroit and expected to take replace Wenceel Pérez, who left Saturday's contest with an apparent injury, on the team's active roster.
Sweeney has spent the past two weeks with the the Toledo Mud Hens, the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate. He has put together a strong string of games since being sent down on July 27, going a combined 13-36 (.361) at the plate with two home runs, six RBIs and six runs scored in 10 games. He recorded a hit in each of the first eight contests of his most recent Triple-A stint.
It has been a much different story for Sweeney at the big-league level, however. He has made 85 appearances with the Tigers this season; in 231 at bats, he has hit just .208 with five home runs, 27 RBIs, 28 runs scored and a .578 OPS.
Sweeney's career numbers since his initial call-up on Aug. 16, 2024, aren't much better. His MLB batting average and OPS are .211 and .599, respectively; in addition to launching nine home runs and driving in 44 runs, he has been playing at just above a replacement-player level (0.4 WAR, according to Baseball Reference). He has contributed -0.3 WAR thus far in 2025.
The New York Yankees selected Sweeney with a first-round (No. 20 overall) pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He played in both the Yankees' and Los Angeles Dodgers' minor-league systems before the latter club dealt him to the Tigers in a deadline-day trade that involved starting pitcher Jack Flaherty last year.
