Lakers to trade for $212M Knicks Finals champion in proposed three-team Giannis Antetokounmpo deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are in the midst of a crucial stretch, but they’ve been playing well recently and face the Houston Rockets in a two-game slate. This season has been a learning experience as the Lakers work to build around Luka Doncic. Doncic understands it takes time, but he wants the team to accelerate the process.

“Dončić being just 26 gives the Lakers a far longer timeline to build a championship-contending team, but that doesn't mean they can slow down and take their time. Dončić told Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick in May that he's not interested in taking the slow approach in building a contender,” CBS Sports’ Jasmyn Wimbish wrote.

Los Angeles is poised for a major offseason this summer. One potential trade target is Giannis Antetokounmpo; however, the Lakers could also leverage him to pursue New York Knicks’ OG Anunoby.

“Likewise, Anunoby to the Bucks does not make a great deal of sense either. The Knicks' defensive ace is tailored to be a key supporting piece on a title team. Being the lone star in Milwaukee would be an odd fit. This is where the Lakers come into the picture. Los Angeles does have aspirations of building a champion around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Anunoby would be the perfect type of player to aid that duo. Offensively, the excellent off-ball arsenal is a seamless addition. Defensively, Los Angeles would get the type of player to build a consistent gameplan around. If the Lakers know Antetokounmpo does not want to come to Los Angeles, helping keep him in the Eastern Conference is just as rewarding for them. It would mean not seeing a top-five player in a postseason matchup any earlier than a potential NBA Finals meeting,” Lake Show Life’s Svyatoslav Rovenchuk wrote.

Anunoby would provide another strong defensive presence alongside Marcus Smart. While this addition wouldn’t dramatically boost scoring, it still makes strategic sense for the Lakers.

Los Angeles is expected to be aggressive this summer, and this move could be a major one. Anunoby has the ability to deliver strong offensive performances, but with Doncic leading the offense, his primary role would be to lock down on defense.
