Yankees may benefit from new 1.53 ERA righty pitcher

The New York Yankees may have a new face in their bullpen this season.

His name is Kervin -- yes, Kervin -- Castro, and he's a 27-year old right-handed pitcher from Venezuela.

He pitched in the Yankees' organization at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barres a season ago. For the Railriders, he had a 1.53 ERA in 35 games.

The Yankees then added Castro to the 40-man roster over the winter, which suggests they're at least considering him as an option for the MLB 'pen.

“Kervin’s gotten my attention,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, via MLB.com.

The Yankees have two spots open in the bullpen, MLB.com attributes to Boone.

That will be behind David Bednar, Paul Blackburn, Fernando Cruz, Camilo Doval, Tim Hill and Ryan Yarbrough.

Competing with Castro include Jake Bird, Brent Headrick and Cade Winquest.

Castro has pitched in the majors before, but not since 2022.

He made his debut in 2021 with the San Francisco Giants and had a 0.00 ERA in 10 games.

He then gave up five runs in just 1.2 innings for the Giants in 2022 and moved on to the Chicago Cubs, where he had a 7.59 ERA in eight appearances.

Castro is looking to get back to the majors for the first time since then.

He pitched in 2023 at Triple-A Toledo in the Tigers' organization, then missed the entire 2024 season before his time with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2025.

Now, he wants a return to the show.
