Former Broncos cornerback signs with AFC North team

The Denver Broncos decided to add a couple of players from the St. Louis Battlehawks' roster following the conclusion of the spring football season in the UFL.

The addition of defensive back and kick returner Sean Fresch led to the team waiving undrafted rookie Ahmari Harvey. The Broncos signed Harvey, who played for Auburn and Georgia Tech in college, following the draft this spring. He was going to have an uphill battle to make the roster, but his dismissal in favor of Fresch seemed much more about special teams than it did the cornerback spot.

The Broncos have a deep group at cornerback, so Harvey was likely looking at a spot on the practice squad as his best bet in Denver this summer. Fresch averaged 28.3 yards on kickoff returns for the Battlehawks this season and 10.4 yards per punt return. The Broncos, who will soon have a big decision to make regarding the contract status of Marvin Mims Jr., likely wanted to take a look at another potential option in the return game.

On Friday, Harvey landed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, just one week after his time with the Broncos came to an end. Harvey should have much better prospects of cracking the 53-man roster in the Steel City than he did in Denver as the Steelers have a lot of younger depth on the roster, as well as aging veterans such as Jamel Dean and Asante Samuel Jr.

The Broncos have already moved on from three undrafted cornerbacks this offseason. In addition to Harvey, the Broncos have already parted ways with William Wright and Paul Manning. They currently have 10 cornerbacks on the 90-man roster, and it's expected that five or six of them will make the final 53-man roster.
