The Houston Astros haven't had outfielder Drew Gilbert in their system since August 2023 after trading the prospect to the New York Mets. Gilbert and Ryan Clifford were sent to New York in exchange for Justin Verlander.
Houston no longer has Verlander after parting ways with the future Hall of Famer last offseason. Ryan Clifford remains with the Mets, while Drew Gilbert was recently traded to the San Francisco Giants in a deal that sent reliever Tyler Rogers to New York. The trade was completed just before the July 31 trade deadline, just over a week ago.
Gilbert, 24, didn't stay in the Giants' farming system for long. On Friday, it was announced that the former first-round pick will be making his MLB debut in San Francisco's series-opener against the Washington Nationals on Friday night.
The move was made by the Giants after placing outfielder Jerar Encarnacion on the 10-day injured list with a grade two hamstring strain.
Drew Gilbert has been impressive since being traded from the Mets to the Giants just a few days ago. He's only played in five games at Triple-A Sacramento, but has been nothing but productive. In 14 at-bats, Gilbert has a .500 batting average, .650 on-base percentage, .857 slugging percentage, and a huge 1.507 OPS while having two RBI and two stolen bases.
The newly acquired Giants player is listed as the Giants' No. 13 prospect on their prospect rankings. He will be batting ninth for San Francisco on Friday night.
