A former WWE champion recently recalled the time he got into a tussle with R-Truth backstage. The incident took place in 2010.

In the first season of WWE's NXT, R-Truth mentored David Otunga. Speaking in a recent video on his YouTube channel, the latter spoke about the backstage brawl they had after Otunga's heel turn.

The 45-year-old stated that during one of his matches, the referee told him to shove Truth away without any prior warning after he lost the contest. Otunga added they were on camera backstage before he got a chance to clarify things with the veteran. He added that the former multi-time WWE 24/7 Champion confronted him, which led to a tussle between them, and he did not know if they were fighting for real or not.

"I haven't had a chance to explain to him, 'Hey, Ronnie [R-Truth], they told me to shove you.' So, I don't get a chance to say that. And now he's confronting me on camera. So, I'm still in character, too. Next thing you know, Ronnie puts his hands up. He tries shoving me back, so then we're tussling. In my mind, I promise you I don't know if we're really fighting or not," Otunga said.

The former two-time WWE Tag Team Champion added that he was inexperienced at the time. Otunga explained how he tried to take control of the brawl by using his strength. The former Nexus member noted that he finally realized that they were on camera and it was all a work.

"Also, they didn't even teach me how to throw wrestling punches yet. I don't know what we're doing, and I think Ronnie is really fighting me. So, my instinct was, let me just grab him up because I'm stronger than him, so he can't hit me. And I'm going to take him down and try to get control of him. So, at least that way you can't tell if we're really fighting or we're working. And then I kind of realized, well, we're on camera. I think we're working," Otunga added.

David Otunga recalls meeting R-Truth the first time

Earlier in the same video, David Otunga opened up about his NXT pairing with mentor R-Truth. The former WWE Superstar disclosed that he had never met the veteran before the show.

Otunga recalled that his first meeting with Truth was backstage at the first episode of the inaugural NXT season. He added that the veteran was "awesome" and they "clicked immediately."

"I got paired with R-Truth to be my pro, and I was to be his rookie. And I never met him before. First time I ever met R-Truth was the very first day that we had NXT, the pilot episode, season one, and I met him backstage, and Ronnie's awesome. We clicked immediately like he's super cool," Otunga said.

Otunga retired from in-ring action in 2015. Interestingly, his last match was also against R-Truth. He lost to the former WWE United States Champion at a house show.
