John Wall is taking on a new job outside the NBA.
The five-time All-Star is returning to the Washington, DC area to become the director of basketball operations at Howard University, according to ESPN.
Wall, who played for the Washington Wizards for a decade until 2020, becomes the latest NBA figure to take a step back in development and management. This is more than just a partnership, as Wall has taken a "hands-on approach" by recruiting and organizing team functions.
"(Wall) has helped shape the program's overall strategic vision with a focus on roster management, name, image and likeness deals, revenue sharing, agent negotiations and player mentorship, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. "He will work alongside Howard coach Kenny Blakeney and team general manager Daniel Marks in the new capacity."
This is Wall's first front office job within sports. He spent a majority of his playing career with the Wizards but also played for the Houston Rockets and LA Clippers. The former No. 1 overall pick was known for his high basketball IQ and being the most athletic point guard during his era.

Wall puts himself in the same league as Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry and Wizards star Trae Young, who've both taken on roles with their respective Alma maters (Davidson, Oklahoma) in an administrative capacity. He's also following in the footsteps of former NBA player Percy Miller, who's the director of basketball operations at the University of New Orleans.
