Marc Savard has made a small but noticeable move after his exit from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Savard was fired after the Maple Leafs' power play struggled badly under his coaching. At the time of his firing, Toronto ranked last in the NHL. The unit converted just 13.3 percent of its chances.
However, since his exit, the Leafs have shown a small improvement. They have scored three goals on seven power plays in their last three games. That jump helped them improve their rank from 32nd to 27th. The Leafs have promoted Steve Sullivan from the Toronto Marlies to replace Savard. Still, it is too early to judge long-term results.
Days after being fired, Savard removed all the Leafs references from his social media profile. The change came quietly, and Savard has made no public comments about his firing. He just returned to X and updated his profile, from a Leafs logo to a picture from his playing days with the Boston Bruins.
However, he again made a quick change, a photo of himself wearing a Team Canada shirt and using scissors. He paired the shirt with a red cap matching the red Maple Leafs logo. Was he supporting Canada's World Junior team? Could be.
Canada is doing well in the tournament, being 3-0 so far. They defeated Denmark on Monday with a 9-1 score, in which 2026 NHL Draft prospect Gavin McKenna scored a hat trick. They have one more regulation game against Finland on Wednesday.
The picture from Savard did not had a message in the caption. He simply added the hashtag “#NewProfilePic” to both of his updates.
Savard had mostly stayed off social media while working in Toronto. He rarely posted during his short tenure behind the bench. Toronto had hired Savard in June 2024 as an assistant under Craig Berube, who is still leading the team.
Maple Leafs have gone 2-0-1 since Savard's firing
Following Marc Savard's firing, the Maple Leafs won two strong games, outscoring their opponents 13-8. They defeated the Penguins 6-3 and the Senators 7-5, showing better overall play. But on Sunday, they lost 3-2 in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings.
Leafs head coach Craig Berube said,
"I liked a lot of our game tonight. It was a good game both ways; we played well, but so did Detroit."After this stretch, the Maple Leafs are 17-15-6, currently out of playoff contention by a small margin in the tight Atlantic Division. William Nylander leads the Leafs with 41 points, and former captain John Tavares leads the team with 15 goals.
