WWE star John Cena closed out his career this past weekend. The star finally retired at Saturday Night's Main Event after a year-long farewell tour.
Cena faced off against Gunther in his last match. The Ring General had won the Last Time is Now tournament to emerge as the final opponent for the Cenation Leader. It was a tough fight for the 17-time World Champion as he endured the punishment dished out by his opponent. Gunther finally slapped on the Sleeper hold, forcing the legend to tap out.
The fans were in awe as their hero tapped out, pulling the curtains on a career spanning over two decades. After the match, the entire WWE locker room showed up to honor John Cena. CM Punk and Cody Rhodes even put their respective titles on his shoulders for one last time. Former WWE star Lana, aka CJ Perry, recently shared on social media that she has been rewatching the match. The former manager detailed that she had already seen the match five times.
"I’m watching @JohnCena last match for the 5th time #SNME"Triple H tried to explain the logic behind Cena's booking
As fans witness their childhood hero tap out, their shock turned to frustration, and they started booing Triple H. During the Saturday Night's Main Event post-show, Triple H was greeted with a huge chorus of boos followed by "We want Vince!" and "AEW" chants.
Hunter tried to explain the booking, claiming that he was trying to stick to the time-honored practice of an established star putting someone over before retiring. He noted that John Cena was on board with the decision and did his best to make Gunther look like a star.
However, the fans were irate and directed their ire at the Chief Content Officer after the event. It will be interesting to see how the fans react on RAW this week.
