Ex-Miami Hurricanes linebacker Denzel Perryman was arrested Friday evening in Los Angeles on a felony charge of possessing an assault weapon, according to TMZ.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that Perryman was pulled over by deputies from the South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station. During a search of his vehicle, officers allegedly found two AR-style rifles and three handguns in the trunk. The rifles were reportedly non-compliant under California law, making them illegal in the state.
As of Saturday morning, Perryman remained in custody and is scheduled to appear in Inglewood Municipal Court on Tuesday. This marks his first felony charge.
Perryman’s agent, Ron Butler, released a statement through NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
“We are aware of the recent reports regarding Denzel Perryman’s arrest in Los Angeles. At this time, we are still gathering facts and will fully cooperate with the process,” the statement read.
“Denzel is a respected veteran in the NFL and a dedicated father, teammate, and professional. While we do not take this situation lightly, we remain confident that the matter will be resolved fairly and in accordance with the law.
“Out of respect for the process and all parties involved, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Perryman played college football at the University of Miami before being drafted in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers.
He spent six seasons with the franchise before signing with and being traded by the Carolina Panthers to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021, where he earned a Pro Bowl selection after recording a career-high 154 tackles. He signed with the Houston Texans in 2023 and returned to the Chargers in 2024.
In 2023, while with Houston, Perryman was suspended three games without pay for repeated violations of the NFL’s player safety rules, as also reported by TMZ.
