The Edmonton Oilers lost 4-3 in overtime to the New York Rangers on Thursday at Rogers Place. The Oilers led 3-1 heading into the third period, but two late goals from New York and a stellar push by J.T. Miller in overtime led to the game-winning goal.

Miller drove the puck from the neutral zone, picked up speed and was left almost unattended by defenseman Evan Bouchard and forward Leon Draisaitl trailing back. He slotted home the goal past Stuart Skiner for the win.

Bouchard, after the game, explained that the idea was for Bouchard to cut back towards Miller to get the block in but the switch with Draisaitl didn't come at the right time.

"Yeah, Miller came in with speed," Bouchard said. (1:20) "We switched a little late, and yeah, in the net. We switched obviously too late."

The Oilers D-man further took blame for the Rangers' game-tying goal at 12:04 in the third period. Bouchard tried to clear the puck, but it was knocked down by Connor Sheary, who passed it to Taylor Raddysh for the finish.

“Cutting them out is definitely going to be big. When one turnover happens, we’ve got to not let it turn into two or three in a row,” Bouchard said. (0:10) “Obviously, it’s happening a little more. That second turnover that led to a goal, I didn’t really try to make a play, it’s off a stick and in the back of our net. That’s definitely got to get cleaned up. Playing harder is going to have to be something that I do.”

It hasn't been the ideal start to a season for Bouchard, who has 7 points in 12 games with a poor -9 rating.

Kris Knoblauch highlights coverage responsibility that led to OT goal

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch in his own assessment, stated that during the 3-on-3 play in overtime, the players on ice shouldn't have allowed Miller to run into the O-zone without any effort.

"Little coverage responsibilities where [we could have used] probably a little more communication, but it should not have been a Grade-A scoring chance,” Knoblauch said during his postgame presser. “We should have been able to deflect that, get that outside and maybe give up a shot, but certainly not him driving to the middle of the net. So, I think that’s disappointing in how that was played.”

The Oilers currently have a 5-5-2 record, a characteristic start to the season, like their previous campaigns. They would hope to turn things around as they look to make the Stanley Cup Finals for a third straight season, and this time win it.
