ESPN analyst has huge expectations for the Tigers' top prospect

Kevin McGonigle quickly made a name for himself as a high school baseball player. As a freshman, he was committed to playing college baseball at Auburn University.

Getting any type of verbal offer as a freshman in high school is tough, let alone it being from an SEC school. That conference is considered the "big leagues" of college baseball.

After winning the Delaware County Player of the Year as a junior, he was named the Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year during his senior year.

ESPN analyst has huge expectations for the Tigers' top prospect

In the summer of 2023, Kevin McGonigle was one of the top draft prospects. He was selected 37th overall by the Detroit Tigers and signed with them instead of going the college route.

And since he has signed, he has done nothing but turn heads. He quickly rose to being the Tigers' top prospect, and coming into the 2026 season, he is currently listed as the second-best prospect in all of baseball.

ESPN's Kiley McDaniel loves this young slugger. He tags him as a breakout candidate for Detroit this season, while also a potential Rookie of the Year winner.

"Though the buzz for No. 1 overall prospect Konnor Griffin gets the most attention, McGonigle has a better shot to break camp as his team's every-day shortstop en route to winning Rookie of the Year. He's so polished and so good at the plate that his position doesn't really matter; get on board while you can."

What makes McGonigle stand out more than some other prospects is that he seems to be the complete package. He has an excellent hit tool and is one tough batter to strike out.

He has also worked tremendously on his power, which is a big reason for his jump in the prospect rankings.

McGonigle could be in store for quite the season.
